Say Cheese looks like a silly photo game, but the story underneath is about what the news does to people. This Say Cheese story explained page walks through the premise, how your photos rewrite the park, what the different endings are saying, and where the idea comes from. Light spoilers for the endings follow, but we do not describe the final scene of Follow the Money.

If you only want to unlock endings, the all endings guide is the faster read.

The Premise

The official game description sets everything up in a few lines. Here is what it tells you, in plain terms.

ElementWhat the game says
Who you areA journalist hired by "Big Media"
Your jobSpread chaos and panic throughout the park
WhyBillions must watch the latest news, and every person has to stay glued to the screen, no matter the cost
The choiceDestroy this peaceful society, or try to change fate and bring hope to everyone
The sourceBased on We Become What We Behold by Nicky Case

So the game hands you a job and a moral question at the same time. Big Media wants fear because fear keeps people watching. You hold the camera, so you decide what the park sees.

How the Story Changes With Your Photos

The core loop of the Say Cheese story is simple, and it is the whole point.

  1. You take a photo. Whatever is in the shot becomes a headline.
  2. The park watches the news. The characters see that headline on the screen.
  3. The characters change. A headline about circles being scared of squares makes them suspicious of each other. Arguments follow, then fights.
  4. You photograph what happens next. That becomes the next headline, and the cycle tightens.

Community guides sum it up the same way: you are controlling the narrative with your camera. Feed the park fear and it eats itself. Feed it something else and it changes direction. The official thumbnails show this with the game's hashtag news banners, from "BE SCARED. BE ANGRY." to a hat trend that rises with "OOH NICE HAT" and falls with "nvm hats aren't cool anymore".

What the Endings Say

The 12 endings are not just collectibles. Grouped by tone, they show different answers to the question the description asks. The grouping below is our own reading, based on how community walkthroughs describe each ending.

ToneEndingsWhat it shows
ChaosViralChasing fear until the park falls apart
FearScared, Breaking NewsThe news amplifies fear, or invents a story when you give it nothing
HopeGood, PeacePhotographing kindness and peace changes the park for the better
TrendsHat, Say CheeseHow quickly the crowd follows whatever is on screen
The mediumTV, Reverse, CricketPlaying with the camera and the screen themselves
RefusalEyes ClosedPutting the camera down and letting the panic stop
TruthFollow the MoneyRevealing who is behind it all

Two endings stand out. Eyes Closed is the only one you earn by doing nothing: when the violence starts, you stop taking photos and the panic fades on its own. And the Say Cheese Ending surprises people. One walkthrough creator says they expected it to be wholesome and found out it was not.

Who Is Behind the Chaos?

The very first scene of the story answers this, if you are paying attention. Before anything goes wrong, a man in a suit pays to cause chaos in the park.

The final ending, Follow the Money, asks you to photograph that payoff before the chaos starts, then follow the story to the end. One community guide describes it as the ending where "we're finally going to find out who's behind all the chaos in the park", adding that you probably already know. We will leave the final scene for you to see in the game, but the clue is right there in the opening.

That makes the story's structure clear. The fear in the park is not natural. Someone paid for it, and the journalist is the one who decides whether to deliver it.

Where the Story Comes From

Say Cheese is based on We Become What We Behold, a short browser game by Nicky Case described as "a game about news cycles, vicious cycles, infinite cycles". Nicky Case released its code and art to the public domain, so anyone can remix it. Say Cheese takes that idea to Roblox, frames you as a journalist for Big Media, and expands it to 12 named endings in 12-player servers.

Our page on Say Cheese and We Become What We Behold compares the two in more detail, and you can play Say Cheese on its official Roblox page.
